BACKGROUNDThe 2010 Apple World Wide Developers Conference launches at 10:00am pst in San Francisco, CA. Steve Jobs will be the keynote speaker. The WWDC has historically been one of the few times each year when Apple (in the guise of Steve Jobs) announces their latest technology that will soon be released. This year one cat is already out of the bag–the next version of the iPhone. Also high on the list will be the next version of the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad OS, v4.
Though there are many sources for you to get blow-by-blow comments on the keynote, The MacXperts will be providing this site with all of the extraneous fluff removed. We will begin our reporting by at least 10:00am pst/11:00am mst. This page will auto-refresh every 10-30 seconds, so feel free to just leave the page up and the “new” news will automatically appear!

End of keynote.
Steve is thanking everyone on the iPhone 4 development team that has worked on this project over the past 18 months.
12:50
- iOS 4 will work on the iPhone 3GS and 3G, but not all features. Most significantly, 3G multitasking will not work - the hardware doesn’t support it.
- Free updates for iPod Touch owners (this is a change in policy).
- Upgrades will be available June 21.
12:43
- iPhone 4 comes in Black and White.
- $199 for 16GB.
- $299 for 32GB.
- If your AT&T contract expires any time in 2010, you are eligible for this subsidized pricing for up to 6 months of early eligibility.
- Available June 24.
- Pre-orders start June 15.
12:40
Steve says he saved the best for last... Video Chat! (Didn’t we all see this at the NY worlds fair 50 years ago?)
- Apple calls this technology “FaceTime”.
- Available currently only with WiFi for both iPhones. Steve says the cellular providers need to do a bit of work to have this via 3G in the future.
- Works by placing a normal phone call. As long as both ends are on WiFi, click the FaceTime button, and you have video chat.
- Zero setup or configuration.
- Apple is releasing the technology to be an open standard that other developers and device makers can use and add to their products.
12:30
Introducing iAd - embedding advertising into the iOS 4 app (oh, good. We don’t have enough advertising in our lives).
- The developer determines where an ad will display.
- iAds keep you in your app. Unlike web banner ads which transport you out of the webpage and into the advertisers site.
- Apple sells and hosts the ads. All the developer needs to do is determine where to put them.
- Developers get 60% of the ad revenue.
- Developers (and the user) have the option to not have ads, probably with an upgrade fee for the app.
- When the ad appears, it takes over the screen, appearing over the app. Click the close button, the ad goes away, and you are returned to your app.
- Many of the Fortune 500 are already signed up as advertisers. Given the number of iOS 4 devices there will be “out there”, this will be a huge advertising resource.
- iAds starts July 1, 2010.
12:22
iBooks and the iBookstore included in iOS 4 on your iPhone:
- Exact same interface as found on the iPad.
- Download the same iBook to all of your devices at no extra charge.
- Download iBook wirelessly, no need to sync with desktop computer through iTunes
- All notes and bookmarks will automatically sync wirelessly across all of your devices. Start reading an iBook on one device, put it down, and open the same iBook on another device–it opens to the page you left off on the previous device.
- Tap to move a PDF attached to an email into your bookshelf.
12:15
New name for the OS: iOS 4.
- Folders
- No excessive battery drain for background applications when multitasking.
- Over 100 new user features.
- Unified Mail InBox (YEAH!!!)
- Threading in Mail
- Option to have either Bing or Google as the default search engine.
- The golden master for iOS 4 is provided to developers today.
12:06
Randy Ubilos, Chief Architect of Video applications takes the stage.
iMovie for iPhone.
- Transitions, titles, themes, animation.
- Workflow very similar to what we know of iMovie on the desktop.
- Export to 720p, 520p, 360p.
- Many of the themes can embed geolocation into the video.
- iMovie for iPhone can use any song from your iTunes library.
- Flash stays on if needed for entire video shoot.
11:58
The next-gen iPhone is introduced.
- 24% thinner than the iPhone 3GS.
- Glass front and back.
- Stainless steel all around sides, part of the antenna system. Antennas for Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, UMTS and GSM.
- A true work of art.
- Front facing camera.
- Micro SIM tray.
- Camera and LED flash on the back.
- Noise cancellation microphone.
- 4x the pixel count in the same amount of screen space. 960x640, 326ppi. HOLY COW! Steve is claiming this is a higher density than that of the human retina at 12”. If I recall my Anatomy and Physiology courses, I do believe he is pretty darn close to accurate. This means that on-screen text appears as crisp and clean as that in a fine art book.
- Existing apps will run fine on the new display, but the new OS will automatically render text and all controls at higher resolution. Once developers add higher-resolution art to their apps, everything will be stunning!
- A 3-axis gyroscope has been added. When working with the existing accelerometer, there are 6-axis motion sensing.
- 802.11n WiFi that will work on 5GHz networks
- 32GB storage.
- Quad-band HSPDPA/HSUPA with 7.2Mbps down, 5.8 up (faster than any carrier can currently support).
- Larger battery=40% more talk time! Up from 5 hrs to 7 hours, 6 hours 3G browsing, 10 hours WiFi browsing, 10 hours of video, 40 hours music. 300 hours standby.
- Camera increased from 3 to 5 megapixel sensor.
- Camera now has a 5X digital zoom.
- New LED flash for the camera.
- Camera is now able to record in low-light conditions.
- Camera can also record HD video at 720p at 30fps.
- Now we have iMovie for the iPhone!
11:30
Market share stats: RIM Blackberry: 58%, iPhone: 23%, Android: 9%.
11:26
Steve back on stage. As of last week over 5 billion app downloads, with $1 billion in revenue earned by 3rd-party developers.
11:24
Activision Senior VP Karthik Bala takes the stage to discuss Guitar Hero.
11:21
Mark Pincus, CEO of Zynga now on stage discussing their wildly popular iPhone and facebook game, Farmville
(comment from Marc). Sure, 70 million people
play at farming, but I can’t get even 1 to help muck the stalls.
11:18
Netflix exec on stage discussing their app and the success they have seen with it.
11:09
In just 8 weeks the iBookstore’s market share has hit 22%.
11:05
Apple has sold 2 million iPads in 59 days. that’s 1 every 3 seconds in 10 countries.
11:03
(comment from Marc). For those of you unfamiliar with the WWDC, it is held each year around this time in San Francisco. Between 2,000-6,000 folks who independently develop software and hardware for the Mac show up for a week of training, Q&A sessions and hands-on labs. This year there are 5,200 attendees.
11:01
Conference is starting.
10:43
The mass of developers is seated. The program may actually start on time!
10:30
